In July 2016, FINRA released the results of the most recent National Financial Capability Study, and the findings were not good. FINRA, the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, regulates the financial-services industry.  

Sales Charge Waivers - Are You Getting Yours?

If you are a mutual fund investor, check your mutual fund prospectus for fee waivers. Look for language such as “Waivers for Certain Investors.” For example, one prospectus I reviewed provided waivers for “an employer-sponsored retirement plan with at least 100 participants or $500,000 in plan assets.” 

National Financial Capability Study Released Today

This afternoon, the FINRA Investor Education Foundation and GFLEC are releasing the results of the 2015 National Financial Capability Study (NFCS). The NFCS is an ongoing, multi-year project aimed at monitoring and better understanding financial capability in America. 

What regulators say about conflicts of interest in the financial services industry

Investors tell me that it's hard for them to understand what a "conflict of interest" might be in a relationship with their financial advisers.  

It's true that it is tough for customers to identify conflicts.  You almost have to be an insider to really be knowledgeable.   

What is safe?

Before "Mary and Bob" retired, they were investing in stock-market mutual funds through their 401(k) plans at work and doing quite nicely. Then, when the financial crisis hit in 2008, they sold their stock funds. 

“We were scared,” explained Mary.  “We wanted our money to be safe.”
